AirFuel Alliance Wireless Recharging and Smart City Launch Ceremony - Mayor Cheng: Wireless recharging services represent an important milestone in the roadmap for Smart City development

While attending the “AirFuel Alliance wireless recharging and smart city launch ceremony” held at HTC Taoyuan Plant in Guishan on September 19th 2016, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan expressed that the provision wireless recharging services in public areas serves as an important milestone for driving Smart City developments in Taoyuan. These measures will make public amenities and services friendlier, greener, more convenient, and smarter at the same time.

Mayor Cheng expressed that the Taoyuan City Government is working with HTC, Qualcomm, NewVastek, and InforCharge in this pilot project, installing wireless recharging and other smart services in the Taoyuan City Hall on a pro bono basis. Public areas, such as libraries, land administration, household registration, civil affairs, and cultural and art centers, have been selected as locales for providing wireless recharging.

Mayor Cheng said that plans have been made to establish 210 wireless recharging stations by November 2016. Users can simply download the APP to locate and head over to the nearest recharging station and press the recharge button in the APP to start recharging their cellphones. Each recharge station offers enough power and range to recharge up to three cellphones at the same time. Future research and development will focus on providing wireless recharging for tablet and notebook computers as well.

Mayor Cheng mentioned that the Taoyuan City Government is actively promoting the Asia Silicon Valley Project for two primary objectives. The first is to establish the creative spirit of the Silicon Valley to bring about growth. The second is upgrade the well-established information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Taoyuan to generate software and cloud services and align them to the needs of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry in order to initiate the next phase of industrial development. Future efforts include incorporating Taoyuan’s massive ICT industry to promote various public services that include the wireless recharging services provided today as well as applying GPS technologies in pet chips and bracelets for senior citizens to help them from being lost.
Mayor Cheng said that Taoyuan has strong advantages when it comes to developing Smart Cities. Taoyuan city is home to major ICT companies in Taiwan, 16 universities, and an average age of 37 years, making it the youngest city in the six municipalities. For example, the Taoyuan Citizen Card was first released in September 2015, and a total of 700,000 cards have been issued over a 1-year period, giving it the fastest growing circulation of any citizen cards offered in Taiwan. The Taoyuan Citizen Card can be used as an employee pass, library card, identification pass, and access card for certain communities. Plans have been made to release another 10,000 Mobile Citizen Cards and incorporate mobile credit card payment systems to enhance lifestyle conveniences.

Attendants to the launch ceremony included legislator Cheng Pao-Ching, Deputy Minister Dr. Tseng Shu-Cheng, Director Wang Ting-Chun of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Department of Posts and Telecommunications, and Deputy Secretary-General Chiu Chun-Ming of Taoyuan City Government.
