Opening Ceremony for the APEX Flight Academy of Ansett Aviation Asia - Mayor Cheng: Taoyuan City Government will fully support the development of the aerospace industry

When attending the “Opening Ceremony for the APEX Flight Academy of Ansett Aviation Asia” on July 11th, Mayor Cheng expressed that the APEX Flight Academy, the first international flight training institute stationed in Taiwan, would be helpful in improving the development of the aerospace industry as well as flight safety in Taiwan. Many universities in Taoyuan have provided undergraduate programs on aerospace navigation and management. Courses on aircraft repairs were also available in senior high and vocational schools. The Taoyuan City Government is determined to support the development of the aerospace industry and hopes that the APEX Flight Academy would help train more professional talents for Taiwan’s aerospace industry.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that Ansett Aviation Asia was established by Ansett Australia, a major Australian airline group. Ansett Australia has the biggest flight training institute in the southern hemisphere as well as training centers throughout the world. Ansett invested US$ 20 million in establishing a flight training center in Taoyuan. This investment is expected to expand to US$ 50 million within the next 3 years. Taoyuan City Government learned about Ansett Australia and their plans to invest in Taoyuan, and started providing full support for this project. The company successfully obtained construction permits in January and usage permits by May. The center was formally opened on July 11th and is expected to provide quality flight training programs in Taiwan.

Mayor Cheng said that in addition to flight services, the Taoyuan Aerotropolis projects would also help support development in maintenance and repairs, production, flight training, and logistics sectors to drive national economy. Taiwan has both geographical and accessibility advantages. The total number of visitors traveling to and from Taoyuan International Airport would exceed 40 million this year. The Terminal 3 and Runway 3 airport expansion project directed by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) shall be finalized soon in order to expand service capacity of the airport.

Chairman Richard Anderson of Ansett Aviation Asia expressed that the completed APEX Flight Academy shall currently provide simulation training for airline pilots from Taiwan, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The second phase of development would introduce emergency evacuation simulation systems for flight attendants in order to provide comprehensive training services for pilots, air crew, and flight attendants alike.

Attendants to the opening ceremony included Representative Catherine Raper of the Australian Office in Taipei, CEO David Garside of Ansett Australia, Chairman Richard Anderson of Ansett Aviation Asia, and Chairman Kao Chien-Yu of the APEX Flight Academy.
