Tour of Taiwan-Netherlands City Innovation Roadshow - Mayor Cheng: Promoting circular economies to establish sustainable development in Taiwan

While attending the opening ceremony for the “Taiwan-Netherlands City Innovation Forum and Roadshow” in the morning of October 17th 2016, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan mentioned that he had led the Taoyuan City Government delegates to visit the Netherlands earlier in June 2016, and was extremely impressed by the new world-changing concepts that the Dutch have introduced to the world. Mayor Cheng also expressed his appreciation to the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office (NTIO) for hosting the Exhibition Tour in Taoyuan and allowing visitors to learn from the experiences and practices of other cities.

Mayor Cheng said that the Taoyuan City Government delegates conducted the “Asia Silicon Valley & Smart Taoyuan” Tour in the Netherlands in June 2016 in order to observe public bicycles and green transportation systems as well as circular economy with recycling and reutilization of various materials to effectively reduce costs while adding significant values to the supply chain. These features may offer great potential to Taoyuan, Taiwan’s most industrialized city, under the areas of electronics, chemical engineering, equipment and machinery production, and parts and components. The search for a new lifestyle conducted by the Dutch is something that everyone can learn from and should definitely be introduced into the city.

Mayor Cheng mentioned that the forum has proposed ten creative and extremely inspiring solutions that include circular economies, social designs, Smart City, healthcare, soil and water management, safe agriculture, Smart Transport, urban planning, high tech industries, and green energy. Both Taiwan and the Netherlands are small countries with limited resources, making recycling and reutilization crucial to national development. The city government shall continue to promote the concepts of circular economy and introduce the Dutch experience as well as the ten principles of urban creativity. Moreover, these ideas will be utilized on holding events such as “Land Art Festival”, and the implementation of the “Asia Silicon Valley Plan” and “Aerotropolis Project”, also it has extreme importance for the applying sustainable development of Taiwan.

Representative Guy Wittich of the NTIO expressed that Taoyuan’s circular economy will play a critical role in Taiwan. Taiwan, like the Netherlands, is a small country that faces many challenges. Due to the lack of natural resources, smarter solutions must be identified to overcome these problems. This is the biggest reason for hosting this event.
Representative, Guy Wittich, pointed out that the “Taiwan-Netherlands City Innovation Forum and Roadshow” was jointly organized by the NTIO and various county and city governments of Taiwan. During the period of October 13th to 28th 2016, the environmentally friendly and energy saving DAF Truck from the Netherlands would be used as the mobile exhibit and tour the seven counties and cities around Taiwan (Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Taichung City, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Taitung County), showcasing the ten aspects of urban development.

Attendants to the event included NTIO Representative Guy Wittich, Vice-Mayor Staf Depla of the Dutch City of Eindhoven, Taoyuan City Deputy Mayor Wang Ming-Teh, Taoyuan City Government Secretary-General Li Hsien-Ming, Director General Dr. Wu Ming-Ji of the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), and President Huang Yu-Cheng of Taiwan Sugar Corporation.
