Mayor Cheng: Integrating textile with design to become Taoyuan’s future feature
While attending the “2016-2017 A/W Fashion Show - Gentle Intimacy & Light Punk - Forthcoming of 2018 S/S Fashion Show” held at the Department of Cultural Affairs in the afternoon of October 9th 2016, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan expressed that the fashion show has successfully integrated local and catwalk models as well as textiles and designs, demonstrating Taiwan’s ability to not only act as a subcontractor, but also to generate its own brands as well. Taoyuan City Government has encouraged both the textile industry and design firms to join forces to make the fashion show a highlighted feature of Taoyuan’s development.
Mayor Cheng particularly pointed out that Kelly Yang, a fashion designer whose works were displayed in the show. Kelly graduated from the Textiles & Clothing Department of Fu Jen Catholic University with a major in fashion design and has completed a course in Stoll Knitting School. Kelly integrated unique textile technologies and design elements in Taiwan to build the country’s own fashion brand. Taoyuan is the capital of the textile industry in Taiwan, and has all the conditions and creative bases required to establish its own fashion brands. Fashion is a medium of diversity, allowing people of all age groups to express their personality and convey their cultures, and has a great potential for future growth.
Taoyuan is the center of the textile industry in Taiwan. Many contractors located along Dihua Street in Taipei also had their roots in Taoyuan as well. With its vast production capabilities, the textile industry had once generated vast amounts of foreign sales revenue for Taiwan. Since then, the industry has transformed into a high tech sector by coming up with new functional fabrics, an area that Taiwan’s textile companies particularly excel in. However, Taiwan still lacks developments of popular brands.
Mayor Cheng mentioned that many textile companies have asked him whether the textile industry, from the upstream sector of chemical fibers to the downstream sectors of fashion design and garment industries, could become part of the “Asia Silicon Valley Plan” implemented by the government. He mentioned that many renowned apparel companies from around the world have subcontracted their production to Taiwanese companies. An important direction for future development of Taoyuan’s textile industries will be brand building and elevation of fashion design sophistication and to develop brands with unique eastern cultural elements.
