Receiving the delegates of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei - Mayor Cheng: Active promotion of friendship exchanges between Taoyuan and Canadian Cities

Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan received the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (CTOT) delegates led by Executive Director Mario Ste-Marie in the afternoon of August 8th 2016 at the Taoyuan City Hall. Both parties discussed issues of economic and trade investments, education, and culture. Mayor Cheng expressed that Taoyuan will be delighted to initiate exchanges with Canadian cities, and was confident that the discussions held during the day will help promote close partnerships in the future.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that Canada is extremely passionate about the values of democracy, human rights, and cultural diversity, while Taiwanese people are extremely familiar and have a friendly view of Canada. In January 2015, Taiwan and Canada entered into an Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income, which was an important milestone for Taiwan-Canada exchanges. It is hoped that both parties would be able to discuss and sign agreements on safeguarding investments and economic partnerships.

Mayor Cheng remarked that Executive Director Mario Ste-Marie is an outstanding diplomat who took part in General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) negotiations, served as the minister of the Canadian Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and worked in appointments in India and Australia. Mayor Cheng is therefore confident in the ability of Executive Director Ste-Marie to expand the ties between Canada and Taiwan.

Mayor Cheng said that Taoyuan City offers 4 major features, namely: (1) Being a gateway to Taiwan and a hub of international transportation. The number of travelers arriving and leaving Taoyuan International Airport is expected to reach 40 million this year (2016); (2) Taoyuan is Taiwan’s largest industrial and logistics base and has an actively developing high tech manufacturing sector, achieving national first in terms of industrial output for 13 consecutive years; (3) Taoyuan is a diverse city and includes 4 major ethnic groups of Southern Fujian, Hakka, Military dependents’ villagers, and the indigenous peoples of Taiwan; (4) Taoyuan City, with an average age of 37 years, is home to a large population of youths and the first choice for many youths looking to settle down.
Mayor Cheng said that the central government is carrying out the “Taoyuan Aerotropolis Project” and the “Asia Silicon Valley Project” that will help promote Taiwan’s competitiveness for the following phase. At the same time, Taoyuan has formed sister city relationships with many cities around the world. However, friendly city agreements have not yet been reached with any Canadian city, and it is hoped that exchanges between Taoyuan and Canadian cities could be achieved in the future.

Executive Director Mario Ste-Marie of CTOT expressed that his official appointment to Taiwan in October 2015 coincided with the presidential elections, and the democratic process has left him with a deep impression. He advocates city-level exchanges between Canada and Taoyuan, and will be glad to see exchanges in higher education, economic development, as well as film industries and culture to strengthen ties between both regions.
