Visit by the Australian City of Logan - Mayor Cheng: Promote more exchanges and partnerships between the two cities

Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan received Mayor Luke Smith of the Australian City of Logan at the Taoyuan City hall on July 26th and mentioned that both Taoyuan and Logan are cities undergoing rapid growth. Mayor Cheng also looked forward to more exchange programs and partnerships in areas such as urban administration in the future.

Mayor Cheng said that relationships between the two cities dates back 20 years ago when Logan became a sister city with Taoyuan City (now Taoyuan District) back in 1995. Taoyuan then underwent tremendous growth, becoming a home to 2.12 million people and was promoted to a municipality in 2014. Logan shared similar backgrounds with Taoyuan. Both are multicultural and young cities. Logan has well-developed industrial and commercial sectors while Taoyuan is a key center of hi-tech industries in Taiwan. Such backgrounds would facilitate bilateral exchanges between the two cities.

Mayor Cheng also mentioned Taoyuan’s role as the gateway to Taiwan. Ansett Australia has established an “APEX Flight Academy of Ansett Aviation Asia” at Luzhu District of Taoyuan City in July. The APEX Flight Academy would be the largest investment made by any Australian company in the last 3 years and demonstrated increasingly close economic and commercial ties between Taiwan and Australia. In addition to being a key industrial center, Taoyuan is also Taiwan’s largest food production center. Food industries happened to be the primary agenda of the Logan city delegates. Mayor Cheng recommended visits to other industries in the future to gain a better understanding of Taoyuan.

Mayor Cheng also mentioned that both sides could develop closer partnership and exchange opportunities in tourism and travel, education, and culture. For example, many Taiwanese students enjoy going on working holidays in Australia. Students in Taoyuan’s universities may therefore be encouraged embark upon working holidays in the city of Logan as well.

Mayor Luke Smith expressed that the city of Logan has been selected by the Australian government as a key center for development, and predicts that city population will grow rapidly in the future. Urban development in Logan will adopt creative elements with particular focus on nursing and medical care for the elderly and to establish the City as a commercial center in the southeastern region of Queensland. Mayor Smith said that he have experienced the warmth of the Taiwanese people and looks forward to more partnership opportunities with Taoyuan to develop the economies of both cities.
