Mayor Cheng: Creating a waterfront Taoyuan City and achieve the goal of 100% river adoption

While attending the river adoption commendation event of “Total Collaboration for 100 Years of Clean Rivers” held in the morning of August 29th 2016, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan expressed that 37 companies adopted rivers in 2014 and 2015, giving an adoption rate of major rivers and coastlines of 41.6%. This figure is expected to increase to the target of 60% by the end of 2016 as Taoyuan strives to achieve 100% adoption in the future. Ecology and urban developments shall be integrated to transform Taoyuan into an aquatic and lush city and reach the vision of “zero flooding and shortages with a clean, water friendly landscapes.”

Mayor Cheng mentioned that corporate adoption of rivers is an aspect of corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainable management, and support for environmental protection. Taoyuan is an important base of industrial production in Taiwan, and this has given extra environmental burden on air, water, and soil. Taoyuan City Government has worked hard to enforce on improving water quality and controlling pollution releases along with major rivers and many severely contaminated streams are now only mildly polluted. Gratefully, wild fish species such as tilapia and carp have now appeared which indicates vast improvements on water quality, cleanliness, and overall environmental quality.

After evaluations, nine corporations that have adopted rivers in Taoyuan have received Excellency awards and were commended on August 29th. They were: Aurotek Corporation, Inotera Memories, Inc., Sea Mild Biotech Co. Ltd., Unimicron Corporation (Luzhu II Plant), Ching Mei Paper Co., Ltd., YAMAHA Motor TAIWAN Co., Ltd., AU Optronics Corp. (Guishan Hwaya Science Park), Yuen Foong Yu (YFY) Packaging Inc. (Xinwu Office), and Datan Power Plant of Taiwan Power Company. Mayor Cheng also thanked to Taiwan Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. (3M) for donating 65 laptops to the Taoyuan City water environment patrol team as part of their contributions for defending Taoyuan’s rivers and aquatic environments. The list of corporations that adopted rivers in Taoyuan is published on the Taoyuan City water environment conservation website. http://web.tydep.gov.tw/04wwd/ty_water/p11_2.html。
Mayor Cheng also said that the event will encourage more corporations to provide their supports, and contribute their ability to protect Taoyuan’s natural environments, then build Taoyuan as a friendly waterfront city. Furthermore, rivers and riverbanks will become life nourishing channels and the places where local residents can enjoy.
Mayor Cheng mentioned that there are 44 water environment patrol teams composed by 1,700 members and they have covered 10 major rivers and coastlines within Taoyuan City. Members of the water environment patrol team are the unsung heroes who often work in secluded locations, picking up litters, checking pollution levels, and period.
This meant that domestic wastewater and sewage have been emptied into Laojie River, Xinjie River, and Huangqian River all these time. After the new administration took the office, re-tender of new domestic wastewater and sewage systems were held by the Taoyuan City Government and which were allowed by the Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior in September 2015. On August 19th 2016, Quan Ding Water Co., Ltd., a joint venture of CTCI Corporation and Hsin Dar Environment Corporation (a subsidiary of Continental Engineering Corporation), was placed in charge of the construction of the sewerage systems and establish sewage systems for about 200,000 households in southern Taoyuan. Total coverage rate is expected to reach about 32% once the sewage systems are completed. Other projects including the Puding Underground Sewerage Systems were commissioned in this year and the Yangmei Underground Sewerage Systems has formally started construction. The eight underground sewage systems of Taoyuan City will gradually establish connections to every household in the city and achieve 60% citywide coverage rate within eight years.

Attendants to today’s commendation event also included Deputy Director-General Hu Chun-Yu of the Department of Environmental Protection.
