Visiting the Cisco Systems’ London IDEA Center - Mayor Cheng: Taoyuan offers great transportation accessibility and regional advantage, making it the best choice for establishing another Cisco IDEA Center

During Day 10 of the “2016 Asia Silicon Valley & Smart Taoyuan - Exchange Tour with the Netherlands, France, and the UK,” the Taoyuan City Government delegate led by Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan visited The Cisco Systems’ London IDEA Center located in East London on July 1st. According to Mayor Cheng, Cisco operates 9 IDEA Centers throughout the world, each focusing on different industries. The London IDEA Center supports about 300 startups every year and is an example of successful startup incubation project supporting innovative ideas in cities around the world. Mayor Cheng invited Cisco to establish an IDEA Center at Taoyuan as the city offers great accessibility and regional advantages.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that the London IDEA Center in East London has helped convert the old industrial center into a cluster of innovative startups. Cisco also established Cisco Hubs in other cities. They regard themselves as platform of resources for supporting creative IoT startups through startup awards and connections with other emerging industries. Cisco also introduced the concept of angel investment funds to support the establishment of small companies bearing higher risks. The London IDEA Center would be home to many small companies with 3 to 7 individuals. Cisco would provide technical support to help the development of innovative technologies.

Mayor Cheng said that the collaborative model between Cisco and major cities around the world was integrated with the local urban development projects. These efforts help cities adopt digital thinking and smarter ways to solve issues such as transportation, environmental protection, water resources, and power consumption. Governments led these development projects while Cisco offered support and implementation.

Mayor Cheng also expressed that if the National Development Council (NDC) decided to work with Cisco and select Taoyuan as the site for the IDEA Center, the city would be able to provide support to establish 100 startups every year and over 500 new companies within 3 years. These startups would be provided with resources, technical support, and a place for them to experiment with their ideas. Secondly, IoT applications could be integrated to ensure proper smart city development in Taoyuan. As a major industrial center, Taoyuan’s environmental burden and power consumption would be larger than other cities. Issues such as the environment, power usage, and water resources must be solved during the implementation process.
Mayor Cheng emphasized that Taoyuan is a key industrial center located at a transportation hub close to the capital of Taipei and Hsinchu Science Park, offering it great accessibility and other regional advantages. Such features make the city the best option for establishing the Cisco IDEA Center. Once the IDEA Center was established in Taoyuan, other Taiwanese cities could setup local Hubs as well. Mayor Cheng believes that this partnership with Cisco would encourage smart and digital learning in Taiwan as well to improve the quality of education.

Finally, Mayor Cheng expressed that the “2016 Asia Silicon Valley X Smart Taoyuan - Exchange Tour with the Netherlands, France, and the UK” was exceptionally fruitful for Taiwan’s “Asia Silicon Valley Project” and smart city projects. The official observation tour allowed the Taoyuan City Government delegates to adopt a more digital and smarter way of thinking to improve Taiwan’s competitiveness for the next phase of industrial development. Mayor Cheng then raised a few examples, such as the visit to the Schiphol Airport of the Netherlands where the Airport City has become a hub of European enterprises while successfully introducing the circular economy development model. In the French city of Grenoble, also known as the “Silicon Valley of Europe,” the delegates witnessed the implementation of Smart Grids and how the city became a center of technological innovations by working with universities and high tech industries. Mayor Cheng sad that Taoyuan City Government has been invited to attend to the European Silicon Valley innovation meeting in September and made plans to sign the “Taiwan-French Declaration for the Asia Silicon Valley Project.” The UK tour included a visit to the Cisco London IDEA Center in order to gain an understanding of the startup incubation process. Every country has its own characteristic and competitiveness that are very valuable for Taoyuan Smart City Development program to emulate.
