A visit to the Second Home Creative Accelerator in London - Mayor Cheng: Referring successful experiences to establish our own Youth Innovation Center to provide more resources for youth entrepreneurship

During Day 8 of the “2016 Asia Silicon Valley & Smart Taoyuan - Exchange Tour with the Netherlands, France, and the UK,” the Taoyuan City delegates led by Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan visited the “Second Home Creative Accelerator” located in London on June 29th (local time). Second Home is located next to the Aldgate East Station and offers an unrestricted working atmosphere that encourages creativity. Nearly 90% of all available spaces were rented out, and the Home also witnessed the successful establishment of entrepreneurship once every 18 months. All these features of success are references that Taoyuan City could learn from. Currently, the Taoyuan City Government has established its first Taoyuan youth entrepreneur headquarter, and plans have been made to establish Youth Start-up Hubs at Andong of Taoyuan District and Xinming of Zhongli District as well as a Youshih International Start-up Village. These amenities would help provide potential youth entrepreneurs with more resources.

Mayor Cheng said that there were about 15 creative accelerators located in London, with “Second Home” being the most famous one. Second Home is a non-profit organization created by a group of entrepreneurs who wished to support youth startups. The building is yellow, transparent, and spacious, and includes shared spaces that include a canteen, meeting rooms, and brainstorming rooms decorated by many indoor plant. The entire building was designed to provide youths and entrepreneurs with a place that is perfect for working, conceptualizing, brainstorming, and joint entrepreneurship. One thing of note is that the founders of Second Home also furnished a room where the presence of electronic devices was restricted so that users can delve deep into their thoughts without distraction.

Second Home offers two forms of memberships, free and fixed, according to the specifications of the services provided and prices. Free members pay a monthly rent of 350 pounds and are allowed to use the common space at the 1st floor. Fixed members, on the other hand, pay a monthly rent of 600 pounds and were allowed to use one of the 78 exclusive studios in the building.
Mayor Cheng mentioned that like the Second Home, the Department of Youth Affairs established by Taoyuan City Government in April 2015, the first Taoyuan youth entrepreneur headquarter, and planned Youth Start-up Hubs at Andong of Taoyuan District and Xinming in Zhongli District would be furnished with joint meeting rooms, office machines, 3D printers, and various tools and equipment. Aspiring youth entrepreneurs can simply walk in with their computers and start working. Office spaces would also be offered for rent at competitive rates. The Taoyuan City Government is also working with the National Development Council (NDC) to convert the 11-hectare old Veteran''s Chemical Plant into the “Youshih International Start-up Village.” The Village would be provided with exhibit areas, meeting rooms, and small “R&D factories” capable of limited manufacturing. All these projects were initiated in order to reduce the barriers of entrepreneurship for fellow youths.
