Visiting the Paris Urbanism Agency - Mayor Cheng: Enhancing economic, cultural, and educational exchange with Europe

During the afternoon of Day 6 of the “2016 Asia Silicon Valley & Smart Taoyuan - Exchange Tour with the Netherlands, France, and the UK,” the Taoyuan City delegate led by Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan visited the Paris Urbanism Agency (Atelier Parisien d’urbanisme, or APUR) and then attended a dinner banquet organized by the Bureau de Représentation de Taipei en France on June 27th (local time). Mayor Cheng said that the French tour covered a wide range of areas such as technology, green energy, social housing, traffic, and urban planning. The Taoyuan City Government would reference these experiences to promote urban development projects in Taoyuan.

Mayor Cheng pointed that there were about 200 French companies in Taiwan. A number of these were established in Taoyuan and they have maintained correspondence with the Taoyuan City Government. The city government will actively support foreign companies intending to invest in Taiwan. The government will work with enterprises to promote industrial development. Additionally, France has demonstrated great dedication to technological exchange. Scientific technology was used to lead industries. France was not only the birthplace of modern democracy, but also a leader in technology and culture. In the future, the city government will continue to enhance its ties with European countries. Taiwan would do well to leverage its own advantages and criteria to promote public, commercial, cultural, and educational diplomacy and exchange.

Mayor Cheng said that the European Tour of the Taoyuan city Government achieved two purposes of building positive exchange between cities and creating future opportunities for commerce and trade. Taoyuan is Taiwan’s largest industrial city. Unlike Hsinchu which is dominated by the semiconductor industry, Taoyuan is a hub of various high tech sectors such as the aerospace industry which made Taoyuan its headquarters. Such features shall present plenty of partnership opportunities between Taoyuan and Europe.
Representative, Zhang Ming-Zhong, of the Bureau de Représentation de Taipei en France expressed that France is the 4th largest trade partner of Taiwan in Europe and second only to the United States as a partner in technological exchange. Technology, research, development, and innovation would be the best ways for maintaining national competitiveness. To build business opportunities in innovative sectors, the Bureau shall continue to promote Taiwan’s advanced industries, attract and create partnerships, actively reduce gaps between industry requirements and R&D efforts, and seek new experiences for observation and exchange. Future focuses would be combining economic and technological advances, especially in “offshore wind power generation” and “Internet of Things,” and matching emerging business opportunities under the current economic, commerce, and diplomatic framework. The Bureau will also continue to deepen bilateral commerce, technological exchange, and discussion meetings between Taiwan and France to encourage the various partnerships and agreements. Representative Zhang also mentioned that President Tsai Ing-wen has regarded the Asia Silicon Valley Project as a major administrative project of the new government. The Bureau thus arranged exchanges between multiple French companies and the Taoyuan City Government delegate led by Mayor Cheng during their tour in France.
