Release date:2016-07-01

During Day 1 of the “2016 Asia Silicon Valley X Smart Taoyuan - Exchange Tour with the Netherlands, France, and the UK,” the Taoyuan City delegate led by Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan met Mayor Theo Weterings of the city of Haarlemmermeer at 1 PM on June 22th (local time). Mayor Cheng said that the Airport City-Haarlemmermeer is the location of the world famous Schiphol Airport. Visiting the city was a key item on the agenda of the Exchange Tour as it is a classic example of mutual integration of transport, industry, and urban developments in airport cities. The city of Haarlemmermeer is also leading the world in circular economy planning. Taoyuan, on the other hand, is Taiwan’s airport city as well as an important industrial district. However, these features have generated significant burden upon the environment. Taoyuan can learn from Haarlemmermeer’s concepts of circular economy and development.

Mayor Cheng said that the Netherlands is committed to establishing circular economic cities, making it a key highlight in the entire world. The Netherlands Trade and Investment Office in Taiwan has planned to showcase the country’s efforts and outcomes in developing circular economies in major cities of Taiwan in the second half of 2016.
Mayor Theo Weterings of Haarlemmermeer introduced the city’s ongoing development programs and circular economy to the Taoyuan delegates, and gave Mayor Cheng an ancient map of Haarlemmermeer as a gift. Mayor Theo Weterings informed the delegates that the old name of Haarlemmermeer literally meant The Lake. The conference room that received the delegates was thus furnished with blue carpet to symbolize that everyone was standing in the middle of the lake. Mayor Cheng, on the other hand, gifted Mayor Weterings with the words “Xiangzhi Wu Yuanjin, Wangli Shang Wei Lin (distance can never separate real friends)” written by Taoyuan’s renowned master of calligraphy Huang Po-Ssu as well as an invitation to the city of Taoyuan.

The city of Haarlemmermeer covers a total area of 185.29 square kilometers and is located at the southwest of Amsterdam. It is home to about 145,000 residents. The city was built upon land reclamation that became available after Schiphol Airport and waterworks were constructed. As the most important international airport in the Netherlands, Schiphol Airport was ranked the 3rd and 4th largest in Europe in terms of cargo and passenger volume respectively. A total of 4 airlines were also based in Schiphol Airport. Haarlemmermeer used to be Haarlem’s Lake. The city was built upon land generated by filling in the lake. This gave rise to the saying that: “God created the world, but the Dutch created Haarlemmermeer.”
