2016 Pioneering Asia Silicon Valley Forum - Mayor Cheng: Taoyuan’s many advantages will help support the Asia Silicon Valley Project and reinvigorate Taiwan’s economy

When attending the “2016 Pioneering Asia Silicon Valley - Improving Taiwan''s Competitiveness” Conference held on May 7th at Hotel Kuva Chateau in Zhongli, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan described Taoyuan’s concentrated industrial composition, great potential for further development, as well as the City''s many advantages in transportation, geography, industrial composition, and population. These features can help support the new government’s “Asia Silicon Valley” project to identify new directives and means of powering Taiwan’s economic development.

Mayor Cheng said that the output value of Taoyuan was NT$3 trillions, making it the largest industrial city for 13 consecutive years. The City possesses highly comprehensive industrial clusters such as high tech, traditional industries, manufacturing, and logistics industry. In the automotive industry, over half of the manufacturers were stationed in Taoyuan City, providing it with great potential of development.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that the new government has been prepared to promote the Asia Silicon Valley Project in Taoyuan with the aim of building connections with professionals, capital, technology, and Taoyuan’s manufacturing capacity. Taoyuan has many advantages in the aspects of traffic, geographic, industrial, and population. Flight time between Taoyuan International Airport and other major cities in Asia would be less than 3 hours. In addition, the Airport, together with Taipei Port, would provide a dual harbor effect. Taoyuan is also close to the political and economic centers, Taipei City, as well as the high tech areas, Hsinchu. Major high tech firms also established plants in Taoyuan as well. Despite the fact that overall population in Taiwan is shrinking, Taoyuan’s population growth actually grew by 30,000 to 40,000 individuals per year and is also home to 17 universities and colleges and has an average resident age of 37 years, providing the City with significant competitive advantages.

Mayor Cheng said that Taoyuan City Government has made many preparations for the Asia Silicon Valley Project. On the end of April, Deputy Mayor Wang Ming-Teh led a delegation to the Silicon Valley in the United States and visited successful enterprises such as Cisco and Super Micro to exchange relevant experiences. In terms of hardware, plans have been made to establish an Asia Exchange Center for Creative R&D Professionals and Aerotropolis World Trade Center in Qingpu District, as well as Youshih International Start-up Village in Yangmei. To further improve Taoyuan’s overall industrial capacity, new industrial park development projects were initiated, such as Taoyuan High-Tech Industrial Park Phase 2, Hwa Ya Technology Park Phase 2, Shalun Industry Park, and Haihu as well as Chang’an Logistic Parks currently being plan
