“May 18th International Museum Day” Initiation Press Conference - Mayor Cheng: Support the establishment of museums to transform Taoyuan as a cultural capital
While attending the “May 18th - FUN Exploration for International Museum Day” initiation press conference on May 10th held at the outdoor plaza of Daxi Guild Hall, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan expressed that the theme of the “May 18th International Museum Day” was to bring museums and cultural landscapes together. The kick-starting event included a number of exhibits related to the museums of Daxi. This was considered perfect since the Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum was Taiwan’s first “unfenced museum,” “citizen’s museum,” and “our museum.” Taoyuan City Government will also establish an “Aerospace Museum” and other establishments to transform Taoyuan into a cultural capital filled with surprises and memorable moments.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that the atmosphere provided by Daxi old streets, museums, and street corner museum showed that the lifestyles of local residents have been fully integrated with local industries and culture. In other words, the “entire city is literally a museum.” Daxi’s unique produce of traditional wood working industry and tofu jerky also showcased the many aspects of local lifestyles. The aim for kick-starting International Museum Day is to help people get closer to museums and identify new directions and cultural perspectives.

Mayor Cheng emphasized that cultural and community building often require decades of constant efforts before significant returns could be reaped. The Daxi Wood Art Ecomuseum is a classic example. Plans for the museum were drafted by the previous Taoyuan County Government. Once the new Taoyuan City Government assumed its office, the organization bylaws as well as budgets would be finalized in order to establish a comprehensive set of relevant policies. Taoyuan City Government shall continue to conduct renovations of Wude Temple, the Daxi Guild Hall, and barracks constructed during the period of Japanese reign. These works will be implemented step by step in order to breathe life into historical buildings.

Mayor Cheng said that the new government has established a “Museum System” (museum, library, and archives, or MLA) designed to integrate local stories, documentation, and records. Such approaches were also adopted by the Ministry of Culture.

Mayor Cheng also thanked 15 street corner museums that signed up the “Museum Encounter at Daxi Streets” Project which included woodcraft artisans, century-old shops, and young and independent bookstore operators that were aimed to transform Daxi museums into a set of new benchmarks. Taoyuan City Government will also be establishing more museums such as the Aerospace Museum in order to make Taoyuan become a cultural capital filled with surprises and memorable moments.

Minister of Culture Hung Meng-chi described Daxi old streets as the perfect example of public agencies working together with
