Visiting Super Micro - Deputy Mayor Wang: Adopting the concept of circular economy for major projects

While visiting Super Micro, a company located in the Silicon Valley in the West Coast of the US, on April 28th, Taoyuan City Deputy Mayor Wang Ming-Teh described Circular Economy and Circular City as key indicators for future urban development. While developing the economy, any urban project must also consider environmental protection, social, cultural, as well as safety issues. Super Micro specializes in the production of high tech products such as high performance server, which are key supporting elements for hardware infrastructure of Smart Cities. Deputy Mayor Wang therefore hoped to initiate partnerships and encourage bilateral exchange for Smart City related topics between both sides.

Deputy Mayor Wang described that most Taiwanese companies leaned towards manufacturing instead of R&D which led to smaller profits. While maximizing profits, many companies often sought measures to reduce costs at the expense of product quality, making it difficult to improve quality. Super Micro, on the other hand, often achieved breakthrough in product development. They not only put a lot of effort into innovation, they also make very great achievements. Factories in Taoyuan are now producing many of the company’s important products while Bade District is now home to the “Super Micro Science & Technology Park.” Deputy Mayor Wang encourages Super Micro to increase their investment in the future. These not only stimulate the economic growth, but also create more employment.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Liang, of Super Micro said that Super Micro specializes in the production of high performance servers and was primarily focused upon the US market. The company began their investment in Taiwan about 3 to 4 years ago and this investment paid off by providing an impressive return that is 200 to 300 percent, with higher profit margins expected next year. Super Micro is also very optimistic about Taoyuan’s development potential and shall continue to direct more investments to the Taoyuan area. Since 80% of the employees are stationed in the US, professional exchange could be considered in the future to bring more employees to Taiwan. Charles emphasized that if there were opportunities in Taiwan, Super Micro would spare no effort to expand their site, the Super Micro Science& Technology Park, which was recently established at Bade District in Taoyuan. In the future, technologies such as campus security and Smart Cloud systems were suitably connected to the Taoyuan City Government’s efforts in Smart City development, and partnerships in these areas are most certainly profitable.
