Mayor Cheng: Continue to support Smart energy-saving technology to transform Taoyuan into a Smart City with low carbon and green features

When attending the Press Conference and product show of Taoyuan City Smart and Energy Saving Efforts on April 21st, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan cited total energy savings achieved by Smart energy saving technologies in Taoyuan City reached 17,245,975 kWh for 0.22% in savings, and thanked the contributions made by the service sector, local communities, various districts, and neighborhoods. Taoyuan is an important manufacturing base in Taiwan with high-energy consumption and a rapidly growing population. Taoyuan City Government is therefore determined in promoting Smart City concepts by continuing its support for low carbon and green technologies and has formulated “Self-Governance Regulations for Low Carbon and Green Urban Development in Taoyuan City” to initiate a number of measures such as electric buses, scooters, YouBike, and the power plan of solar photovoltaic. The aim was to “lower energy use and environmental burden.”

Upon assuming office, the municipal government initiated steps to legislate the “Self-Governance Regulations for Low Carbon and Green Urban Development in Taoyuan City.” Mayor Cheng expressed that these Regulations will keep encouraging smart energy saving plans and a series of relevant measures such as solar photovoltaic, green landscaping, green buildings. Dedicated contributions provided by government agencies, schools, businesses, and citizens allowed Taoyuan to reduce energy consumption by 17,245,975 kWh for 0.22% savings.

Mayor Cheng described that Taoyuan is responsible for 13.6% of total energy consumption throughout Taiwan and is a big city of power consumption only following Kaohsiung City that is a center of heavy industries. From statistics compiled by the Taiwan Power Company Taoyuan Office, Taoyuan City is ranked 1st place in terms of growth rate of energy consumption, indicating growth of Taoyuan City’s industries and population. These observations highlight the necessity of promoting energy saving activities in the city. The low carbon city project initiated by the Taoyuan City Government focused on the theme of “Smart Energy Saving” in 2016, and initiated subsidies for electric scooters, promotion of electric vehicles, establishing Public Bicycle Rental System, and promoting road jogging events. For the solar power project, the City Government plans to provide over 300 public buildings with solar photovoltaic panels, providing power return rate of 18% to 22%. Every school that was equipped with solar power panels achieved great energy saving ratios, and it is hoped that such facilities can be further expanded to every community and village in the country for sustainable urban development.

Mayor Cheng also described the Smart Energy Saving Competition which divided service industries into 3 groups according to the range of energy consumption, with group A
