Riverside Youth Lifestyle Day - Mayor Cheng encouraging youths to emulate the spirit of Luffy from One Piece to dream and adventure

While attending the “2016 Youth Week Events - Riverside Youth Lifestyle Day” at Xinshi Park of Pingzhen District on March 27th, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan described the attractions provided at the Riverside Youth Picnic Event, which include picnic in the park, bicycle tours, cultural and creative markets, Cosplay performances, and exhibits by participating youth social groups. Mayor Cheng hoped that the event would encourage young people to settle in Taoyuan as the city will allow youths to dream bigger and get stronger. Mayor Cheng also encouraged fellow youths to emulate Luffy from One Piece and his ability to dream and initiate his own adventures.

Mayor Cheng mentioned the fact that Taoyuan is a young city built for its youths. Youth Festival 2016 is special as activities offered include music festival on the lawn, riverside park picnic, Cosplay performances, exhibits of the results of youth social groups, exhibits of youth X-sports culture, exhibits of youth international volunteer groups, basketball trick shot performances, and light-hearted bicycle tours.

Mayor Cheng cosplayed as Gol D. Roger from One Piece when he attended the event, and described the comics “One Piece” as a tale conveying the message on the spirit of adventure. Mayor Cheng therefore encouraged everyone to be brave and chase after their dreams to seek the impossible. Many challenges will be encountered during the journey. They may encounter experienced friends who provide help, or crafty adversaries who would get them into trouble. A person’s life can be compared to a seafaring journey. Winds would not be always in their favor, but those who win are those who dream and adhere to their original goals. This was spirit behind the Taoyuan City Government and its new Department of Youth Affairs. This department is aimed to provide youth support in terms of housing, lifestyle, work, and social participation in order to encourage youths to settle down in the city. Those hoping to flee Taipei or go after their dreams are welcome to settle down in Taoyuan.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that since its establishment in April 1st, 2015, the Department of Youth Affairs would be celebrating its 1st anniversary. A Youth Inquiry Committee will also be established on March 29th with the Department initiating a discussion on the “participatory budget” where youths determine how this budget was to be allocated.
