When attending the “Taoyuan City Station Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Tour de Taiwan at the Taoyuan City Hall Plaza” on March 8th, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan described the route for Taoyuan City Station which would start from the Taoyuan City Hall Plaza, go through Taoyuan’s 10 administrative districts, and end at Ren’ai Parking lot at Jiaoban Mountain, Fuxing District. Students and visitors would root for cyclists along the way to let them experience the warmth of Taoyuan. Hopefully, Tour de Taiwan would successfully market the attractions of Taoyuan City.

Mayor Cheng expressed that Tour de Taiwan has been rated by the International Cycling Union (UCI) as a Category 2.1 premium event. A total of 160 elite cyclists and 20 teams from 28 countries have signed up. Taoyuan City Station is the most unique and challenging of the 5 stations arranged for the Tour. The Station has a total length of 123.64 km that 70 km of the Tour would take the cyclists through speed dashes along Provincial Highways No.61 and No.66. These steep climbs posed formidable challenges to the cyclists as well.

Mayor Cheng mentioned the green corridors, coastal sceneries, Hakka cultural landscapes, tea plantations, and Taiwanese aboriginal culture at the final destination of Fuxing District. Cyclists can also enjoy the breathtaking scenic views of windmills and the century-old Baishajia Lighthouse when going through Provincial Highway No.61.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that Tour de Taiwan 2015 was affected by strong winds and rain. This year, however, the city was blessed with great weather. Mayor Cheng also sincerely thanked the Police for enforcing traffic controls for the Tour right after their hard work at the Taiwan Lantern Festival. Traffic control for Tour de Taiwan 2016 was designed to be people-oriented. Controls were only enforced a short moment before athletes arrive in order to minimize the impacts caused to fellow citizens.
