Receiving the personnel from Netherlands Trade and Investment Office. Mayor Cheng: Arranging a Visit to the Netherlands and Germany for learning Waterworks, Agricultural Innovation, Circular Economy, and Urban Management Plans

When receiving the personnel from Netherlands Trade and Investment Office (NTIO) on February 26th, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-Tsan praised the active support provided by NTIO representative Guy Wittich for helping to build cooperative partnerships between the Netherlands and Taiwan in the areas of cultural exchange, circular economy, and green cities. The Netherlands has always been a considered a world leader in waterworks. Taoyuan City Government would be scheduling a visit to the Netherlands and Germany to learn their waterworks, agricultural innovations, circular economy, and city governance programs. Taoyuan City Government is also considering the possibilities of becoming sisters or friendly cities with the cities in the Netherlands to strengthen mutual partnerships.

Mayor Cheng pointed out that once the hearings for the Aerotropolis Project are completed around April to May, results of the hearings shall be used to revise the project and then be submitted to the Ministry of the Interior for review. This review process is likely to take about one to one-and-a-half years before actual work may begin on the Aerotropolis. Hence, there is still plenty of time to take suggestions from different sources on urban designs of the Aerotropolis and identify solutions for integrating production, residential, and ecological elements of cities in the vicinity of the Taoyuan Airport.

Mayor Cheng mentioned that the “Asia Silicon Valley” project proposed by the new government will be based upon Taoyuan’s manufacturing sector with particular emphasis on developments for technological exchange, R&D, branding, and design. Future discussions will also review the means of integrating the Asia Silicon Valley project with the Aerotropolis.

Mayor Cheng mentioned the unique background that made Taiwanese folk beliefs and religions. Taiwan is considered highly liberal when it comes to religious freedom. People would not be oppressed because of their beliefs. Adherents of different faiths also harbor respect for other religions. Taiwan Lantern Festival 2016 also included a “Religious Blessings Area” which harmoniously accommodated exhibits setup by Christian, Catholic, Yiguandao, and other traditional faiths while warmly receiving visitors from various creeds.

Taoyuan International Airport is located in Dayuan District. Mayor Cheng thus talked about its history. Being a coastal region, many missionaries came to Dayuan to proselytize locals. There is a legend mentioning that a Dutch nun came with Catholic mission to Dayuan 168 years ago. She eventually settled down and passed away in Dayuan where her cenotaph located.
