Mayor, Cheng Wen-Tsan, of Taoyuan City attended the “Press Conference of Multiple Culture Lantern Area for the 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Taoyuan” on February 16th and declared that Taoyuan’s cultural diversity would be the City’s assets and charms. The Multiple Culture Lantern Area would portray Taoyuan’s cultural diversity which include Southern Fujian, Hakka, military dependents, Burmese, Taiwan''s indigenous people, and Southeast Asian elements. Off-Islands such as the 3 counties of Kinmen, Penghu, and Matsu, port cities of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Narita city of Chiba prefecture, and Mihara city of Hiroshima prefecture at Japan, were also invited to provide their exhibits. The 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival would not only portray Taiwan’s unique features, but would also serve as a focal point for international tourism that help promote and improve the visibility of Taiwan and Taoyuan.
Mayor Cheng pointed out that the purpose of the Taiwan Lantern Festival would be to demonstrate the unique charms and urban features of Taiwan. For Taoyuan, the 2 primary features would be its “Technological Dream” and “Cultural Diversity.” Technological Dream drives industrial advancements, while Cultural Diversity is rooted in Taoyuan’s rich diversity. Taoyuan is a window of Taiwan’s diverse cultures, with significant proportions of Southern Fujian, Hakka, military dependents, and Taiwan''s indigenous people residing in the area. Taoyuan is also home to the largest number of foreign spouses (with 65,000 families) and foreign workers (98,000 individuals). The Diverse Exchange Lantern Area therefore set aside a place to fully exhibit lanterns that represent various Southeast Asian countries.
Mayor Cheng described Taoyuan as a classical immigrant city with many residents hailing from Kinmen, Penghu, and Matsu. The 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival invited Kinmen, Penghu, and Matsu to participate in the exhibit, the first time in 27 years. This meant that the Taiwan Lantern Festival could be aptly renamed as Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu Lantern Festival. What people describe as the Taiwanese Community should be described as the Taiwanese, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu Community.
Mayor Cheng said that visitors could appreciate the lifestyles of people in Penghu at the Penghu Lantern Area that include attractions such as the Twin Hearts Stone Weir, Qigui Culture, and Wai’an Fishing Port Lanterns. To date, only residents in the Xinwu District of Taoyuan and the Penghu Islands continued to practice the 300-year old tradition of building trapping pools to catch fish. The Kinmen Lantern Area would feature Kinmen’s 1000-year old culture with Kaoliang liquor (distilled sorghum liquor), Fengshiye (guardian lions against the storm), Sanluo Dacuo (three-courtyard mansion), Baroque-style architecture, an
