Demonstrating Taiwan''s hope and energy with the combination of technology, culture, traditional, modern, local and international: Mayor Cheng

Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan, along with President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Chang Shen-Cheng attended the opening ceremony of the Taiwan Lantern Festival today at the plaza in front of the Taoyuan High Speed Rail Station.

Mayor Cheng said that the Taiwan Lantern Festival is the most well-know brand in Taiwan. This year, the Festival is held in Taoyuan, combining technology, culture, traditional and modern factors to express the thoughtful design of the Lantern Festival. Cheng also said that this is the year of the monkey, with the Lantern Festival held here in Taoyuan, he hopes this will bring blessings and prosperity to Taoyuan.

Cheng mentioned that there are ten highlights of this year''''s lantern festival, with designs from both local and international factors. The 2016 Lantern Festival is the largest in history, stretching over 32 hectares with six exhibitions. The main lantern "Monkey In Taoyuan" is 26-meter tall featuring the famous "Sun Wokong." Over 200 LED lights gives the Monkey King its full colors.

Cheng said that the "Tech World Lantern Exhibition" shows the potentials of Taiwan''s tech industry. The Universe Tower, Eye of the Future and Tech Cloud show the futurism twist of the Lantern Festival. On the other side of the festival is the "New Utopia" exhibition at Qingtang Park. The "Water Theater" is the first time the lanterns are presented as a musical. There will be three performances each night, and is regarded as the water version of the Cirque Du Soleil.

Mayor Cheng also extended his warm welcome to the seven participating Japanese cities, Cheng Chiang, China, Hong Kong and Macau. Also, lanterns from Kinmen, Matsu and Penhu completed this first joint effort exhibition from island wide and offshore islands.

Cheng said that there are over 1100 lanterns participating in this year''s festival, each has its unique design. For 14 days from February 22 to March 6, visitors from island wide and abroad are welcomed to visit the Lantern Festival and experience Taiwan''s amazing culture and industries.

The firework show lasted for 8 minutes during the opening ceremony, shooting over 19 thousand fireworks. The magnificence of the firework highlights the Taiwan Lantern Festival.

Chang Duan-Han, Director of Public Information at the Taoyuan City Government said that visitors began to pour in since the carnival parade this afternoon. By the time of the opening ceremony, more than 200 thousand enthusiastic visitors are here with us at the Taiwan Lantern Festival.
