A Team of Okinawa General Bureau of Japan Cabinet Office Visits Taoyuan To Establish “Industrial,” “Logistic,” and “Educational & Cultural” Exchanges, Mayor Cheng Proposed
Cheng Wen-tsan, Mayor of Taoyaun city, yesterday (January 19th), took part in discussions with the team from Okinawa General Bureau of Japan Cabinet Office, who are currently visiting the city of Taoyuan. The meeting focused on industrial cooperation between Okinawa and Taoyuan. Proposals include the formation of industrial exchanges in industrial, logistic, educational and cultural areas, hoping to create substantial industrial cooperation and a win-win situation.

Mayor Cheng indicated that Taoyuan is one of the largest industrial bases in Taiwan and with Taoyuan International Airport and Taipei Port. It enjoys a “double-harbor advantage,” and in the future, will become the best choice of location for cross-strait trade and transshipment base, under the cooperative strategy of logistical industry. And Taoyuan is pushing forward its Taoyuan Aerotropolis projects, which can collaborate with Okinawa’s “Great South Gate Project” and “Naha Free Trade Zone,” utilizing the advantages of both sides’ logistical industries and the flexibility of the free trade port to create unlimited opportunities for cooperation.

For specific mode of cooperation, Mayor Cheng believes Taoyuan and Okinawa can try to carry out technology exchanges in the fields of environmental protection, solar photovoltaic, renewable energy, biotechnology, and food science, among others. He has suggested that the two can organize exchange forum to establish a platform and have counterparts to encourage direct exchange between businesses, to facilitate the cooperation between logistics advantages, and to build up a normal exchange of education and culture.

He also noted that the industries themselves will be the leading roles of the industrial exchange. The language between enterprises can expedite a more direct form of cooperation and achieve consensus. As for Taoyuan, Industrial Development and Investment Promotion Committee will be the window to assist in establishing the exchange forum for industries, logistics, and education and culture. While holding the exchange forum, we can work together with department stores and shopping centers to organize an “Okinawan Week,” or small fairs to allow the industries in Taiwan to become more familiar with Okinawa.

Morikuni Makino, Director-General of Department of Economy and Industry, Okinawa General Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Department, Cabinet Office, said, “The population size of Okinawa prefecture is not large, so is the scale of the industry, which carries out ‘only one,’ refined, and unique approach. We hope to take advantage of Taiwan’s superior marketing power to promote further the distinctive features and peculiar products of Okinawa into the Asian market. We will also actively facilitate the bilateral business cooperation, starting
